With over 70% of the results declared from Saturday, February 25th, 2023,  National Assembly elections in Nigeria, the All-Progressives Congress Party, APC is in pole position now.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), 98 out of 109 seats in the Senate and upper chamber of the National Assembly, and 326 out of the 360 seats of the House of Representatives and the lower chamber have been declared.

Elections will be conducted in the remaining 21 Senatorial and 34 House of Representatives seats respectively.

The APC leads with 57 senators-elect, followed by the People’s Democratic Party who have 28 senators-elect and Labour Party with 6 senators-elect.

For the House of Representatives, the APC is also leading with 162 seats, followed by the PDP with 102 seats and LP with 34 seats in the lower chamber.

This means the APC will retain the leadership at the executive and legislature at the national level for the period 2023 to 2027. 

The 10th National Assembly will be inaugurated in June, 2023 with the election of the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.

In the democratic setting the legislature plays the key role of law making that also affects the judiciary and oversight functions on the activities of the executive arm of government.

The 10th National Assembly will be saddled with the responsibility of supporting Nigeria’s economic recovery and stability, as it navigates the challenges of declining revenues, rising debt costs, and dwindling external reserves.

Some of the tasks for the 10th National Assembly include the review of the Securities and Exchange Commission Act, Central Bank of Nigeria Act amongst others.
