2023 Gubernatorial Elections: Accord, ADC, LP and PDP Explain Plans for Developing the Lagos State Economy

As Nigerians prepare for the March 18th, 2023, gubernatorial elections, WebTV in collaboration with Proshare organized a ‘Twitter spaces’ session to X-ray the economic manifestos of the Lagos state gubernatorial candidates.

 

The digital online session featured Hon. Hakeem Dickson of the Accord Party, Mr. Funso Doherty of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr. Rex Adebanjo, the Director General, Labour Party (LP) Gubernatorial Campaign. 

 

The event was anchored by international broadcast journalist, Yemisi Lanre-Idowu, with Mr. Abdulqudus Isiaka, a Senior Economist, Impact Research at Proshare as co-host. 



Economic Manifesto

The focus areas of discussion were Public Finance, Human Capital and Basic Infrastructure.

 

Public Finance

The candidate of the Accord Party, Hon. Hakeem Dickson, noted that under his watch the Internally generated revenue (IGR) of Lagos would be accounted for transparently. 

 

He also asserted that his government would curb double taxation and give priority to local government autonomy.

 

Mr. Funso Doherty the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) providing views on the part’s manifesto, observed that efficiency in revenue management would be a core component of his administration. 

 

He said if elected as Governor, his administration would extricate Lagos State from the contractual agreement with ‘Alpha Beta’ on tax revenue collection and data management.

 

The People’s Democratic Party candidate Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran making his case said his administration would provide incentives, that would bring back businesses that left Lagos to neighbouring states. 

 

Mr. Rex Adebanjo the Director-General of the 2023 Lagos Labour Party Gubernatorial campaign office, who represented Architect Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour said there would be prudent management of resources, that would enable the administration to execute significant projects if elected.



Basic Infrastructure

In the area of basic infrastructure, Hon. Hakeem Dickson of the Accord Party said he would phase out street urchins (agberos) and danfo buses, replacing them with a functional rail system and upgrading the bus rapid transit (BRT) system.

 

On addressing the 3.2m housing deficit in Lagos, the Accord party candidate stressed that his administration would adopt high-rise buildings in the city. He stated that if voted into office.

 

Mr. Funso Doherty of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) stressed that he would curb the menace of road transport union officials and introduce modern, attractive, and safe last-mile options to decongest traffic for Lagosians.

  

The ADC candidate also added that the government would create an enabling environment for SMEs, invest more in the primary healthcare system and explore innovative ways to improve the housing situation in the state.  

 

Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) committed to repairing the old existing roads and expanding new projects, that would connect more communities and ease traffic. 

 

In addressing the housing deficit, he stated his focus will be to develop high-rise buildings and allocate them to low-income earners and those in the informal sector. He also added that his administration would prioritize the creation of new towns in semi-urban divisions in Badagry, Epe and Ikorodu. 

 

Mr. Rex Adebanjo speaking on behalf of the Labour party candidate said the GRV administration will anchor on building and construction, to create economic opportunities. 

 

He also noted that the Labour party if voted into government, will complete four rail lines covering 160km in 4 years. He also added that emphasis will be laid on lighting up the streets of Lagos, to enable a night economy. 

 


Human Capital

Looking at Human Capital, the Accord Party candidate Hon. Hakeem Dickson said he would be focused on sustaining free education, awarding more scholarships, and integrate tech in schools. He also promised to subsidize healthcare services, create special health insurance packages, and improve security through community policing.

 

The ADC candidate Mr. Funso Doherty in health said his government will adopt a barbell approach, that will improve primary care, and emergency/critical care while leveraging technology to provide efficient services and reduce avoidable mortality. 

 

Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran in his plan noted that he would sign an executive order that would increase the minimum wage of workers from N35,000 to N60,000. He also added that he would ensure compulsory & free health insurance, free education at primary and secondary schools with free uniforms to incentivize enrollment. 

  

The candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Architect Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour represented by the Director General of the Campaign team; Mr. Rex Adebanjo laid out a plan to modernize education by improving the facilities at schools from primary to secondary levels with embedded broadband penetration.  

 

He also added that a GRV administration would modernize security, providing technology, logistics and the necessary support to the police in the state.
