FSDH Webinar: Sanwo-olu, El-Rufai, Obaseki Speak On COVID-19 Pandemic and Local Realities

As Global economies begin to explore the options of gradually reopeningafter several months of COVID-19 induced lockdown, the FSDH Group made up ofFSDH Holding Company, FSDH Merchant Bank, FSDH Asset Management, FSDH Capitaland Pensions Alliance Limited,  hosted a webinar which provided anopportunity for three state Governors H.E Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu (Lagos), H.EMallam Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and H.E Godwin Obaseki (Edo) shared theirperspectives on "Global Pandemic: Local Realities and Peculiarities".

 

Moderated by Mr. Hakeem Bello Osagie, Chairman of FSDH Group, it was anopportunity for the Governors to give further insight into their approaches tothe management of the COVID-19 pandemic in their respective states, and stepsthey intend to take towards the gradual reopening of their state economies.

 

Governor Nasir El-Rufai in his remarks said during the initial lockdownfrom the last week of March, Kaduna state had focused on protecting largecritical factories, while ensuring that the Food, Beverages and Pharmaceuticalssectors remained active and accessible to citizens.

 

According to El-Rufai the state had worked assiduously to ensure thatthe companies operating worked within the guidelines of the appropriatesanitary conditions and hygiene standards necessitated by the COVID 19 virus.

 

On social gatherings,  that had been banned in the state, theGovernor said there had been continuous engagement with religious leaders. Hesaid Kaduna State had partnered with telecommunication companies to utilize thetelephones to provide palliatives for the citizens.

 

On his part Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu said Lagos State had beenwell-positioned for the COVID-19 pandemic,  because of the Ebola outbreakand its management protocols put in place 6 years ago.

 

In response to the current health challenge, he said that the Statecurrently has 18 isolation centres with 1,500 bed capacity with 22 samplecollections centres.

 

He said that the three-pronged strategy for Lagos State in addressingthe challenge of COVID-19 was that of collaboration, coordinationand communication. Sanwo-olu  said there would be a gradualapproach to reopening Nigeria's economic capital.

 

In Edo State, the Governor, Mr.  Godwin Obaseki, explained that theState's focus has been to serve as the "Logistics Hub of Nigeria", with emphasison governance, human capacity building and expansion of health careinfrastructure and effective communication.

 

Obaseki informed the 3,000 participants at the webinar that Edo Statewas ramping up its capacity to deal with the COVID-19 virus by strengtheningthe Federal Specialist Hospital in Irua dedicated to infectious disease andimproving the infrastructure at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital,UBTH.

 

Jaya Wen, an Associate Professor at the Harvard Business School, in hercontribution said there were many "easy wins" in the approach to opening up theeconomy, which could be explored including the following;

  • Hygiene, sanitation and distancing: Securesupply of soap, sanitizer, and masks, provide handwashing stations  inpublic areas, implement spacing and capacity controls in public areas.
  • Ban large gatherings: Engage community andreligious leaders focus, with emphasis on events to hotspots.
  • Public messaging and education: Thisentails coordinated campaigns about hygiene and distancing, increase publicenlightenment and education on the COVID 19 transmission.
  • Travel restrictions: This should coverinternational hotspots, keeping flights within the country with essentialservices and movement of items like food.

 

Also speaking, Professor Asim Khwaja, of the Harvard Universityhighlighted the crisis of knowledge failure,  the binary chart curse andthe need for citizen engagement as key issues to be considered and addressed bythe global community, as the gradual easing of the lockdowns take shape.

 

Dr Alero Roberts, a Senior lecturer at the Lagos University TeachingHospital, LUTH, affirmed that molecular tests on COVID-19 are already ongoingin Lagos.

 

The moderator Mr. Hakeem Bello-Osagie believed that the pandemicpresented political, sociological, economic and  psychological realitiesfor nations across the globe.For Nigeria, the Chairman of the FSDH Group was ofthe view that it was a time to rethink the structure of the nation.
