The latest 2023 Sub-National ranking on Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria revealed that Gombe, Jigawa and Sokoto states are the top three performing states in Nigeria.
According to the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), the ranking provides empirical information on the attractiveness of States’ businesses and to serve as a credible reference resource for businesses and investors.
PEBEC stated that the report builds on the inaugural Subnational “Ease of Doing Business” report released in March, 2021 and improved it in several areas, including deepening of the methodology and enhancing the statistical significance of the survey.
Gombe retained its position as the leading state with an attractive business climate for doing business in Nigeria, with a rank score of 7.15 from the maiden edition of the ranking in 2021 where it scored 7.69.
Jigawa state moved from its third position in 2021 where it scored 6.79 to the second position in 2023 with the score of 6.88.
Sokoto state dropped from second with the rank score 6.88 to third with the score of 6.83.
The top three states Gombe, Jigawa and Sokoto are located in the North-West region of Nigeria.
At a country wide level, the PEBEC report showed that Nigeria’s overall Ease of Doing Business satisfaction score saw a marginal increase from 5.45 in 2021 to 5.69 in 2023.
This was below expectation given the sustained push of PEBEC and Sub-Nationals for an improvement in Nigeria’s business environment.
Lagos Nigeria’s economic capital ranks 29 with the score of 5.16 from its previous rank of 20 with the score of 5.28.
