Market Snapshot

Trading activities in the Nigerian equitiesmarket closed the year 2019 with  -14.60% YTD loss as against -17.81% YTD loss and +42.30% YTD gain recorded in 2018 and 2017 respectively.  

Analysis of market turnover revealedthat total volume traded decreased by -21.52% in 2019 as against +5.92% growth recorded in 2018. Also, total value traded decreased by -21.52% in 2019 as against +2.06% growth in 2018. 

The market recorded 34 gainers to 98losers in 2019 as against 32 gainers to 109 losers in 2018.

Volume and Value by Sector

Financialservices sector outperformed other sectors with 76.07% contribution to totalvolume traded on the Nigerian bourse in 2019 as against 74.22% contributionrecorded in 2018. Conglomerates and Consumer Goods sectors followed closely onthe table.

Financial services traded 59.13 bln volumes in 2019 to lead the pack,Conglomerates and Consumer Goods sectors came in second and third with 5.01blnand 3.37 bln traded volumes respectively while the Natural resources sectortraded the least volume with 81.67 mln units traded.

Our Analysis of equity transactionsby volume reveals that WEMABANK topped thevolume of equities traded as 9.08 bln units of share were traded in 2019; ZENITHBANK followed with 7.27 bln units while ACCESS came third with 6.58 bln units.

Similarly, analysis of equity transaction by value reveals that GUARANTY toppedactivities with N175.32bn share value traded in 2019; ZENITHBANK followed with N145.54bn share value while MTNN camein third with N109.93bn share value transacted in the course of the year, 2019.
