Polaris Bank CEO, Abiru Harps On Capacity Building In Banking

The Group ManagingDirector/CEO of Polaris Bank Limited, Tokunbo Abiru, has stressed theimportance of staff training as the bedrock of a strong financial system andinstitutions.

 

Abiru made this known atthe graduation ceremony of the first set of graduands from Polaris BusinessSchool, the Bank’s Training School in Ibadan, Oyo State at the weekend.

 

According to the topbanker: “You have to train your people properly and let them know the valuesthat you stand for and also the kind of understanding that they must bring tobear when they are coming to the real world and the workplace, in particular.

“The essence of today isabout inculcating our values in the new set of graduates that we are bringingon board. They have to buy into the values of the institution and topmost onthat is the need for them to place very high premium on ethics and what thebank and the larger financial sector stands for which is very strong corporategovernance.”

 

Addressing the new staffwho came through the popular graduate trainee route, of the combined streams 43and 44, of the Polaris Graduate Intensive Training respectively, the PolarisBank GMD advised them to place very high premium on ethics and corporate governanceas a major part of what shapes anybody’s career in an industry like thefinancial institution.

 

“You have been trainedto be professionals and leaders, who will make the difference in any area ofthe bank you are deployed to. You are undergoing today’s graduation not becausewe sought to do you a favour, but because you emerged successful from amongstthousands of Nigerians that sat for the same examination,” he added.

 

Earlier, Polaris Bank’sHead of Human Capital Management, Taiwo Olupeka, said the 61 graduands were thesuccessful lot among the over 20,000 applicants who sat for the bank’srecruitment test.

Olupeka described themas the “pioneering set” after a very rigorous and thorough exercise, chargingthem to do their best to make the bank the first and leading commercial bank inthe country.

 

The new employees whoare fresh university graduates with diverse academic backgrounds and impressiveacademic records, have completed an intensive nine-week basic banking trainingprogram at the school based in Ibadan.

A total of 61 freshgraduands successfully passed through the rigorous academic programme and haveforthwith joined the workforce of the bank after the necessary basic bankingtraining programme.

 

Two of the new hires,Sandra Onachukwu and Chinonso Nwakaudu, emerged best graduating students of thetwo streams and carted away the CEO prize for their brilliant efforts.
