Top practitioners and stakeholders within the Nigerian ecommerce sector have called on the FederalGovernment to institute a consolidated legal framework for the sub-sector toenhance its sustainability and expansion.
The call came at a webinar on ecommerce in Nigeriaorganised by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Key speakers at theevent led by the President of Abuja Chamber of Commerce, Prince AdetokunboKayode noted that most regulations and legal provisions about the sub-sectorare scattered over so many instruments, leading to differing interpretationsand confusion on many levels.
The speakers affirmed that such provisions andregulations should be consolidated so that a national policy on ecommerce andits national legal framework can be produced through consultation with allstakeholders.
While the speakers admitted that such policy and laware long overdue, they appealed to the Minister of Communications and DigitalEconomy to set the machinery in motion even as the participants also chargedthe organised private sector to step into the stage without delay.
Several speakers pointed attention to the increasingimportance of the sector due to the pandemic, adding that Nigeria should movefast to create enabling environment to further boost the profitability andefficiency of the various ecommerce businesses.
