CTD2020: Stakeholders Call for Increased Financing for Activities In Nigeria

There is a clear need to champion the cause of continuouslearning, encouraging organizations and the government to finance Learning& Development activities, for organizations, companies, ministries,departments and agencies. This was part of the key takeaways from the Championsof Talent Conference 2020 organized by the Learning and Development NetworkInternational (LDNI) which focused on the theme  "Building New Pathways"

 

The President, LDNI  Rev. Collins Edebiri in hiswelcome address said that times are evolving and it is necessary to keep up withthe pace of learning and development.

 

"In times like these, it is what we know that willcarry us through" he added.  this gave birth to the theme of theconference.

 

Dr Oladimeji Alo, Non-Executive Director, ARM Life Plc in his goodwillmessage said that LDNI has championed new developments across the world. Heacknowledged the fact that they have also been at the forefront of equippingpeople with digital tools critical to modern applications.

 

Speaking on digital learning, the Head of Learning andDevelopment in Stanbic IBTC, Mr. Godwin Akpong, explained that digital learningis a technology that allows learners to choose what, how, when, and where tolearn.

 

He said, "As learning professionals, we must stayclose to new learning tools. we learn by doing and we take this mindset intothe workplace".

 

Speaking further Akpong noted that Digital learningbecomes effective when the learners are empowered to implement the knowledgeacquired in their different professions.

 

Giving further insight he stressed that the process ofdigital learning also allows for networking. According to him, research hasshown that 69% of employees regularly seek out new ways of completing work fromco-workers. Beyond coworkers, employees learn from broad networks of peers.


Dr. Prebagaren Jayaraman, in his outlook on unlockingorganizational learning, pointed out that it is necessary for organizations tofully optimize talents. He tasked organizations with giving priority to talentmanagement.

 

He described organizational learning, as a system thatfacilitates steps to optimizing talents to achieve sustainable goals.

 

"Learning becomes meaningful when the result istransferred but unfortunately locked learning is the current reality in mostorganizations. The way out of this therefore will be to pay attention to everytalent in the organization and optimize these talents for proper use" Jayaramansaid.

 

On her part, Mrs. Adejoke Alli, the Chief LearningOfficer at FIDSON Healthcare Plc called for leadership plans that align withtalent and business.

 

She highlighted the following steps to take inachieving a successful leadership development plan in an organization;

  • Identify the role/department that drives theorganizational goals
  • Consider the different levels that will enablebusiness development
  • Identify the people with leadership potentials thatare occupying these roles

In terms of leadership potentials, she identifiedinterpersonal skills, creativity, innovation and pragmatism as criticalskillsets that leaders must acquire and sustain if they are going to stay a thetop of their businesses and professions.
